The dissolution of a relationship can have far-reaching effects on how you see yourself and the world around you. Initially, after being subjected to such a life-altering situation, it is important to breathe and get your bearings. Here are some helpful tips from Wendi Schuller, author of “The Global Guide to Divorce.”

-Don’t face it alone. It is important to surround yourself with friends and those people who won’t allow you to wallow in bitterness and resentment. They are also great sounding boards for the feelings you are experiencing.

-Keep in contact with your family, especially your kids. Find ways to play a pivotal role in the lives of those who most important to you; your children. Bottom line: stay involved in as many ways as you can.

-Enjoy yourself. Practice makes perfect, and sometimes we need to practice the art of having fun. “Life is about balance,” says Schuller. “Keeping anger and anxiety bottled up inside can lead to cardiovascular problems and a good laugh can release them. Having a blast with your kids at an amusement park, soccer or other entertainments, is also good for bonding.”

-…and take care of yourself! Potato chips and diet drinks are not a diet that anyone can live on. You need fuel to survive all the anxieties that comes along with separation, and protein provides the brain power you will need when it comes to making difficult decisions.

-Focus on work. Did you know your job can keep your mind off worries and anxiety? Putting your nose to the grindstone and accomplishing the tasks at hand can give you satisfaction that might be missing in other aspects of your life. Other tips include keeping a tight budget, taking time-outs and seeking professional help for those moments when you feel the most stuck.
